Our interior designer, Alysha Alli, has rounded up some of the top Christmas decorating trends for dining rooms and provided some inspiration for three different table scape themes, which will all provide the perfect backdrop to your festive fayre. Which one will you choose?
What is table scaping?
If you’ve ever searched for ‘how can I decorate my Christmas table?’ then you may have come across “table scaping” – a term used by designers to describe creating a beautiful, cohesive style when dressing a dining table.
Alysha explained: “It involves thinking about the theme for your table scape and choosing key items that work well together and create a unified overall look. I love creating table scapes that enhance the room, while being uncomplicated; after all, a dining table is primarily a place to enjoy wonderful food and drink. By combining complementary fabrics, place settings, dinnerware, glassware, cutlery, and just a small number of accessories, you can really wow your guests this Christmas."
Three exquisite Christmas table scape ideas
This year we’ve selected three themes from the Christmas décor trends for 2024 to inspire your dining table décor.
1. At the circus
Embrace a whimsical approach to your Christmas table décor with this bold, surrealist theme. Pair red and white tableware with striped place mats reminiscent of a circus tent.
Alysha said: “This look is fantastically kitsch with tonnes of retro elements tying together a bright palette. There’s a freedom with this theme as anything goes – you can be playful with unusual colour combinations, shimmer and frosted surfaces. Why not opt for a maximalist Christmas centre piece – perhaps a turning carousel or bauble display? We love to add felt animals like reindeer and little mice in tailored outfits alongside flocked stars and Christmas trees.”
2. Designing with darkness
For a more refined and moody ambiance, explore the theme of darkness for your Christmas table decorations. Deep black, charcoal, and chocolate tones look fabulous combined with forest greens and golden tones. Focus on creating rich textures with imperfect ceramics and natural lush botanicals with smoother oxidised glass and dulled gold.
Alysha said “This look works beautifully on a marble or natural wood table. Natural textured napkins can be given a luxe feel simply folded or bound with gold ribbon, while matte black baubles, jewelled elements and velvet can add theatre.”
3. Sourcing sustainably
The theme for handmade, natural textures and personalised features can create one of the most warm and welcoming Christmas tables for your festive fayre.
Alysha said: “Remind your family of memories of Christmas past by repurposing items you already have. Personalise everyone’s place setting with their initials printed onto a napkin or add a small gift to encourage a sense of belonging. Make new memories creating paper and crafted decorations for your table. Even if you’re not the crafty type you can achieve a similar look by sourcing decorations from local makers. I like to personally use Etsy for homemade treasures! Simple foliage from your garden or a local forest can be added to bring the beauty of the natural world indoors, evoking the senses too when sitting down as a family for dinner.”
How to create your own Christmas table scape
Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to express your personal taste through your seasonal décor. Alysha described: “It’s a real time for celebration, so why shouldn’t that come through in the use of joyful and whimsical decorations that give your home a fresh look for a few weeks?”
There are trends to suit every taste and we hope we’ve inspired you as to the new looks available and how to create a statement table scape to really impress your family and friends.
How to dress a table for Christmas
Read on for some top tips on how to create the perfect Christmas table scape and more about what must be on a Christmas table.
1. Choose hand-crafted for a personal touch
Hand-crafted decorations such as natural wood coasters and felt figurines can add a sense of warmth and character to your table and bring charisma to a new home dining area. Pair handwoven textiles like raffia with natural elements for a softer, cosier ambience.
Craft your own accessories to add a personal touch and create memories that will be cherished such as handmade Christmas crackers with bespoke gifts inside for each guest such as a personalised reindeer tree decoration. Providing small keepsakes will guarantee an unforgettable Christmas.
2. Build your table outwards
The key to building your Christmas table is to layer with style. Start with your base first, whether that be a table runner or tablecloth, then work outwards adding in accessories or foliage along your table. Add candlesticks for a cosy feel but ensure these are kept below the eyeline. Add napkins next to each place setting, instead of on top of plates. Roll these into adonised metal napkin rings for a touch of on-trend glamour.
3. Embrace the outdoors
Bringing the outside inside will guarantee to add character to your Christmas table. Foraging in the great outdoors is a great way to involve the whole family and seasonal foliage can really infuse that winter character into your tablescape. Pops of bright red berries and fresh sprigs of greenery, alongside rich warm tones of dried oranges and pinecones, can look wonderful layered with candles. You can embrace woodland in unexpected ways – through motifs on napkins or sisal placemats for a contemporary boho finish.
