Donation helps give donkeys a dry home

27th August 2024
Lache Animal Sanctuary

A Chester animal sanctuary has been able to undergo repair work to a stable roof after receiving a funding boost from Redrow.

Linked with the our Chester community fund, Lache Animal Sanctuary, that houses retired donkeys, has been able to fix a leaky roof after receiving £500 from ourselves.

With day to day running costs to provide animal feed and hay and ground rent paid for by volunteers and community fundraising efforts, any extra funding is down to generous donations.

Keith Scott, group co-ordinator of Chester South Alliance to which Lache Animal Sanctuary is an affiliated group, said: “The Lache Animal Sanctuary (known locally as The Donkey Field) mainly looks after retired donkeys. The land is owned by Cheshire West and Chester Council and volunteers and supporters pay the rent and also raise funds for other essential items."

"Many people bring their spare carrots, bread, and apples to a collection point and local shops also donate surplus food. The donkeys themselves are looked after by two devoted pensioners, Archie and June, who hold the tenancy and look after the animals."

“We’ve needed to organise for the roof of one of the buildings to be fixed for a while as it leaks and has missing tiles but there was no reserve to pay for this maintenance, so Redrow’s donation has helped us pay for this. An interesting fact is that unlike horses a donkey’s coat isn’t waterproof!”

Anna Evans-Kerr, sales director at Redrow NW, said: “The ‘Donkey Field’ is a much-loved part of the community with families enjoying seeing the donkeys contentedly roaming around their home field. We’re really pleased our donation has helped to fix the stables to give the donkeys a dry home.”
