Mythbusting heat pumps: what you need to know

Everything you need to know about air source heat pumps. Are heat pumps noisy, efficient, or even worth installing at all? Find out now.

At Redrow, energy efficiency is really important to us. So much so, that it’s built into every stage of our homes thanks to our ‘fabric first’ approach to construction. Lots of our new Eco Electric homes now come with air source heat pumps, designed to help promote sustainable energy use and help our homeowners lower their energy use.

Our homes use Vaillant and Daikin ‘monobloc’ heat pumps; this means there’s an outdoor unit to heat water that is then either circulated through the heating system or stored in a hot water cylinder. You can find out more about how air source heat pumps work and how we’re using them, but we’ve also put together a handy guide to some of the most frequently asked questions and myths about them, so you can get as excited about them as we are!

Are heat pumps worth it?

Yes, we certainly think so. Air source heat pumps are a low-maintenance, energy-efficient way to heat your home. If you’re interested in reducing your carbon footprint and living more sustainably, choosing a new home with a heat pump is a fantastic investment that can help you lower your energy usage.

Are heat pumps noisy?

A well-maintained, properly running air source heat pump isn’t any more noisy than most other appliances. Heat pumps use a fan to draw in the air that’s turned to warmth, as well as an internal compressor.

Generally, during normal weather and function, a heat pump runs at around 40 decibels - this is the level of a quiet office or light rainfall. During particularly cold weather when the pump needs to work a bit harder, it can reach noise levels of around 60 db - which is about as loud as a gas boiler.

As noted in the Guardian article above, some older models of air pumps might have operated a bit more noisily. Rest assured that all the pumps we use in our new homes are the latest, up-to-date technology and operate at a low level so as not to bother you or your neighbours.

Are heat pumps expensive to run?

Air source heat pumps are typically cheaper than traditional gas boilers and are, overall, more cost-effective. We often get asked “are heat pumps cheaper than gas?” at our show homes. Heat pumps use up to five times less energy than a gas boiler, so even though electricity is more expensive per unit, you still end up saving overall.

Homeowners with heat pumps can also take advantage of specific energy tariffs. So although there’s a myth that heat pumps are more expensive than a traditional boiler, they are actually far more efficient in both energy and cost.

Do heat pumps work in cold weather?

Heat pumps work at temperatures all the way down to -15℃, so the British winter is no match for them! You’ll be able to heat your home comfortably all winter long, since the innovative system uses energy to turn warmth from the outside air into a gas and then into the water that circulates through your home’s heating system.

Do heat pumps work with radiators?

Heat pumps can be used in homes with radiators, underfloor heating, or both. For example, in Redrow’s Eco Electric homes, you’ll find underfloor heating across the ground floor as standard.

Because a larger surface area is generally required for the best temperature for heat pumps, underfloor heating is often considered one of the best options for homes with heat pumps. However, efficient radiators also work really well with this efficient heat source.

Do heat pumps heat water?

Yes, heat pumps are designed to heat the water in your central heating system. The heat pump heats up water which is then either circulated through the heating system to warm the house, or stored in a hot water cylinder for use in taps, showers etc.

Are heat pumps efficient?

Yes, air source heat pumps are actually much more efficient than other heating systems - they actually operate at 300% efficiency, since they often produce three times as much energy as they take in. A-rated gas boilers only operate at around 85%, which proves just how efficient pumps are for heating.

Do heat pumps need servicing?

Heat pumps need servicing regularly to make sure they retain their efficiency and operate properly all year round. Air source heat pumps should be serviced annually by a qualified engineer. With proper maintenance, heat pumps are likely to outlast a gas boiler, with an average lifespan of 15 to 20 years.

Do heat pumps cool as well as heat?

While some heat pumps can cool as well as heat, we use models that provide hot water to your central heating system or water cylinder.

Can heat pumps be installed indoors?

Air source heat pumps can be installed indoors, but you’ll also need a duct to let the air in and out. There needs to be proper room for ventilation, you’ll need to factor in building regulations and safety. For all of our houses, the heat pumps (Vaillant and Daikin ‘monobloc’ pumps) are installed externally, in a discrete position that doesn’t take up too much room. There is a different type of heat pump that we use in apartment blocks which is internal.
