Smart home technology is designed to make everyday life even easier. Learn how Redrow homes embrace smart devices as standard.

Life these days has become busier than ever before. At Redrow, we make it our mission to create homes that help make the everyday a little easier, both through the design of our new developments and the style and build of our homes. Our homes are built to be future proof, and encompass smart home technology from the ground up. Within My Redrow you can add a number of optional extras to your new home - from integrated appliances to extra sockets and light switches, so your home will be hooked up to all your tech exactly the way you want.

Imagine stepping into a new build home equipped with smart devices that seamlessly integrate to create an atmosphere of comfort and convenience - smart home technology is revolutionising the way we live! So, how can smart home tech work in your home, and what are the benefits?

What is smart home technology?

From smart thermostats that learn your preferences to energy-efficient lighting systems that adjust automatically, there are lots of smart devices available, all designed to make life easier while promoting sustainability and keeping your energy bills low.

Smart home tech means internet-connected devices and systems that automate various functions within a home. These devices can be controlled remotely using a smartphone, tablet, or other connected device. Some common types of smart technology include:

Smart thermostats

These can automatically adjust the temperature in your home based on your schedule or preferences.

Smart lighting

Lights across your home can be controlled remotely, scheduled, or even set to respond to your voice commands. You can also use smart plugs to plug lamps into.

Smart appliances

Typical household appliances like dishwashers, ovens, and washing machines can be controlled and monitored remotely.

Home entertainment systems

Smart TVs, speakers, soundbars and other devices can be integrated into a single system for easy control.

Smart security systems

Indoor and outdoor smart security cameras, smart doorbells and alarms can be monitored and controlled remotely from an app. Smart locks are also available for an extra layer of security.

Your lifestyle, budget and preferences will determine what the best smart devices for you are, but you’re sure to find a range of options that will slot seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Within MyRedrow, you can choose and add smart-enabled devices to your new home so they’re ready and in there when you move in. For example, in certain homes including The Oxford, you can choose to add Siemens appliances with built-in functionality like Home Connect, which allows you to control the oven using apps like Amazon Alexa or Google Assist.

How do smart home devices help efficiency?

Across all new Redrow homes, the introduction of energy efficiency features isn’t just a trend; it’s a commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and embracing energy efficiency. In our Eco Electric and Eco Now homes you’ll find plenty of features that are designed to help you live more efficiently, but there are plenty of other smart additions you can add to your home to make life even easier.

Smart home technology and home automation systems empower you to monitor your energy consumption in real time, so you can make more informed decisions about your family’s weekly and even daily usage. You can often measure energy usage from different devices across your home environment to find out where you can make changes and cut back on usage.

Some smart devices can automatically adjust to changing conditions and temperatures and even occupancy to minimise energy consumption. For example, a smart thermostat can lower the temperature when you're away or adjust it based on external weather conditions (like the Great British winter!).

Because lots of smart home tech is controlled remotely, you can turn lights off while you’re not there to save power and turn them on as you arrive home. You can schedule your devices to turn on or off at specific times, ensuring they're only operating when needed. For instance, you can schedule your lights to turn off when you leave the house for work and turn back on before you arrive home, or schedule your dishwasher to run during off-peak hours.

How Redrow homes use smart technology

We’ve created all our award-winning collections of new homes to be tailor-made for modern living. As well as things like underfloor heating and open-plan living spaces, this extends to the integrations we’ve added for technology.

Every Redrow home comes with access to high speed broadband as standard, through FTTP (fibre to the premises). As well as offering excellent internet connectivity for streaming and work, this means you’ll be able to connect a variety of smart devices - from home security monitors to smart speakers.

There are lots of ways tech can make moving into a new home easier. Plus, you can personalise your new home with My Redrow during the choices stage of construction. You can add things like additional media plates or USB plug sockets to plug in your smart devices. The Redrow app offers virtual tours as well as integration with Apple and Google Maps to help make finding your ideal property even easier.

We’ve even incorporated technology into the process of choosing your new home. Our kitchen visualiser tool, available in all customer experience suites, allows you to personalise every element of your kitchen. The tool uses real-time computer imagery, and is just one of the ways we’re innovating the homebuying journey - it’s why we were awarded ‘Best Application of Technology’ at the UK Customer Satisfaction Awards 2023.

Choose your dream property from your chosen Redrow development to start building your next smart home. Download the Redrow app today on Apple or Android.
