A New Chapter: Couple’s first home in Kent new build

11th February 2025
Redrow - News - Gurraj and Parmjoat

After eight years of living with parents in London, Gurraj (38), and his wife Parmjoat (35) took their first step on the property ladder and bought a three bedroom home at Redrow’s Amber Fields development in Sittingbourne, Kent.

By living rent-free and controlling their budget, the couple was able to save an impressive £38,000 towards their house deposit over nearly five years. Parmjoat explained: “Not having to worry about rent meant we could focus entirely on saving for our deposit. We have no regrets. It would have been much harder to achieve this if we had been renting, especially with the prices in London.

“We lived on a very tight budget. We sacrificed holidays and luxuries. Our last holiday was in 2018, but knowing it was all for our dream home made it worth it”.

Wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life while still having easy transport links to get to work, the couple focused their search on Kent. After years of living on a busy London road with constant noise from buses and emergency vehicles, they were drawn to the tranquillity of a small cul-de-sac in the Amber Fields development. The move to Sittingbourne has been a huge change from the busy London streets they left behind, and they couldn’t be happier with their decision.

Their new home, a three-bedroom Letchworth design, has also proven to be the perfect fit. “The open-plan kitchen and dining area is perfect for hosting family and friends, and the energy-efficient features help us save on bills,” said Gurraj.

The couple, who have been together since 2012 and married since 2016, celebrated their eighth wedding anniversary in their new home. Since moving in, they have embraced the community and are enjoying the sense of belonging that comes with it. “We’ve already built great relationships with our neighbours, who are all lovely. There’s a real sense of community here, and we’re excited to meet more people as the development grows,” Parmjoat said.

Looking back on their journey, the couple agree that their sacrifices were worthwhile. Gurraj summed it up: “This has been a dream come true. Seeing all our hard work payoff is incredibly rewarding.”
